On March 13, Kajima Corporation announced a significant reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for the construction of a concrete dome for the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo. The company will use a type of low-carbon concrete that reduces emissions by 70% compared to conventional construction methods. The dome is set to be built in the West Gate Zone of the expo venue. It will serve as an exhibition space on environmental education.

A Substantial CO2 Reduction

Dome construction is scheduled to commence in April and be completed in November 2024. The dome, made of reinforced concrete, will stand 5.45 meters in height. Its oval shape will have a diameter of 23 by 18 meters.

By using low-carbon concrete combined with a technology that absorbs CO2 during manufacturing, Kajima expects to achieve a substantial CO2 reduction.

The Kajima Technical Research Institute, located in Tokyo's Chofu City, conducted a trial construction. A dome of equal dimensions to the one planned for the Expo was opened to the press for tours.

CO2 emissions from the construction industry account for about 40% of total emissions from industry. As such, companies are increasingly focused on developing technologies to curb these emissions.

"We want to bring this technology to society to make an even greater contribution to decarbonization," explained Noboru Sakata, Executive Officer at Kajima Corporation.
