On May 21, Emperor Naruhito delivered a keynote speech via video at the 10th World Water Forum in Bali, Indonesia. He spoke of the tsunamis and water supply disruptions after the recent Noto Peninsula earthquake. The Emperor states his wish for more sharing of experience and knowledge on a global scale for disaster preparedness.
Water Issues and Disasters
In the 20-minute video message, Emperor Naruhito spoke in English about the forum's theme, "Water for Shared Prosperity." He introduced issues like tsunami damage, large-scale water supply disruptions, and toilet provision in the disaster-stricken Noto Peninsula area. He shared photos from his recent visit to the region with Empress Masako.
Emperor Naruhito pointed out that disasters are a major obstacle to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He emphasized that many challenges faced by the international community, including climate change, are deeply related to water. He further expressed his hope that discussions at the forum would lead to the realization of prosperity that "leaves no one behind."
Emperor Naruhito has made addressing water issues his life's work. He has given speeches at international conferences on numerous occasions since his time as Crown Prince.
