On November 28, Japan 2 Earth (J2E) held an online meeting with Kawakami Sangyo, a Tokyo-based company. The meeting featured Koji Sato, Executive Officer of Product Development, and Satoshi Komori, who heads the Business Administration Section. Kawakami Sangyo is well-known for producing a type of bubble wrap called "Putiputi."
Diverse Applications
Komori explained the company's business, saying, "Our company was founded in 1968. We hold about 60% of the domestic market share for cushioning materials, making us number one in Japan."
He continued, "Not only are our materials used for cushioning, but they are also gaining attention for their application in disaster evacuation shelters. For example, they can be used to block cold air by laying them on the floor or wrapping them around the body to stay warm."
Furthermore, he shared that the company made donations and provided support to shelters during the Noto Peninsula Earthquake.
Sustainable Practices
The company also produces "Plapearl," a plastic board made of hardened bubble wrap. These can be used as simple beds or partitions in evacuation shelters. They are also being sold for stockpiling to local governments and businesses. The product line includes around 1,000 different items, with a high recycling rate of 90%. This impressive recycling rate has been highly praised at international exhibitions.
One challenge Komori pointed out is that, while they hold the number one domestic market share, their international market share is still small, at only about 3%.
Currently, they are focusing on expanding their overseas business. They have requested J2E's support in increasing Kawakami Sangyo's global recognition and promoting the company's strength in having a high recycling rate.
Plastic is often blamed for its environmental impact, particularly due to microplastics and its non-degradability. However, increasing the recycling rate of plastics is one potential solution to the plastic problem. J2E will continue to address environmental issues and promote awareness from a broader perspective.
