Tokyo Deaflympics Opens with Spectacle and Sign Cheers

Tokyo marks the Deaflympics' 100th anniversary, as performers, spectators and celebrities embrace diversity and the spirit of the Games.

The Tokyo Deaflympics opened on November 15. At the heart of the Games is a vision of an inclusive society, where individuals with and without hearing loss can rise above barriers and showcase their strengths.

During the opening ceremony at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in Shibuya Ward, performers took the stage with acts designed to convey the Games' spirit and philosophy.

Beginning shortly after 4:30 PM, athletes from around the world entered the venue over the course of about an hour, greeted by the rhythmic sounds of Awa Odori drums and bells.

As Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and other officials delivered their remarks, pairs of international and Japanese sign language interpreters provided simultaneous interpretation. Monitors also displayed English and Japanese subtitles.

Conversing in Sign

Throughout the ceremony, athletes mingled and enjoyed the atmosphere, conversing with one another in sign language.

As the Japanese national flag was raised, singer Yo Hitoto performed the national anthem, Kimigayo. Beside her, sign language interpreter Satoshi Ezoe — dressed in a traditional kimono — used both hands to convey the essence of the anthem.

Performers from diverse backgrounds, both deaf and hearing, conveyed a celebration of the past and hope for the future using only their movements. Their performance moved the audience, amplified by the interplay of light and vibrations.

Spectators showed their support by sending "sign cheers," a form of hand motion applause inspired by sign language, instead of verbal cheers.

Amid the applause, the opening event concluded successfully just before 7 PM.

The international quadrennial competition for deaf athletes will be held until November 26.
